2026 RAV4: First to feature Toyota’s new Arene software

  • by

Woven by Toyota (WbyT) announced today that their Arene software development platform is making its debut in Toyota’s latest-generation RAV4, set to launch within the 2025 fiscal year. This marks a significant stride towards Toyota’s vision of a software-defined future with zero accidents, as the new RAV4 will be the first Toyota vehicle delivered to customers with features developed and powered by Arene.

Arene: Enabling a Software-Defined Future

Arene is engineered for the safe, secure, and scalable development of software. By merging Toyota’s manufacturing expertise with modern software engineering, it provides developers with a more unified and human-centric approach to building and deploying high-quality automotive software.

The platform is built on three core packages:

Arene Software Development Kit (SDK): This foundational SDK creates a unified software development lifecycle, from design to maintenance. Traditionally, in-vehicle software and hardware were tightly linked, requiring custom development for each application and vehicle model. The software’s SDK helps decouple these dependencies, allowing developers to create modular software components that can be reused across various applications and vehicle models. In the new RAV4, the Arene SDK powers the multimedia system’s cockpit voice agent, the center display, and the latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), Toyota’s proprietary suite of advanced safety technologies.

Arene Tools: This suite of enterprise-grade tools enables virtual visualization, testing, validation, and management of software, reducing the reliance on physical prototypes. This virtual approach accelerates development cycles across vehicle models and shortens the time it takes for new features to reach the market. For the latest RAV4, advanced simulation tools were used to efficiently test various driving scenarios and safety-related functions within its TSS system.

Arene Data: This advanced data infrastructure facilitates the gathering and analysis of driving data (with customer consent) to support over-the-air updates and continuous software improvement. These capabilities are crucial for translating real-world insights into improvements for autonomous driving (AD), advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and personalized in-vehicle experiences. The software’s Data specifically supports data collection for TSS in the new RAV4.

Enhancing Toyota Safety Sense and the Driving Experience

WbyT also contributed additional core technologies to the new RAV4’s Toyota Safety Sense, including AI models for surrounding object detection and driver condition monitoring, along with user interface enhancements.

Arene is set to revolutionize the development and deployment of “ever-better cars.” The combination of the Arene SDK, Arene Tools, and Arene Data not only shortens development times but also accelerates the delivery of new and improved features even after the vehicle leaves the factory. This means the driving experience will become more personalized, adaptive, and continuously refined over time. As one of Toyota’s most popular global models, the all-new RAV4, powered by Arene, serves as a launchpad for continuous global innovation, delivering “best-in-town” mobility experiences. It represents the crucial first step toward WbyT’s vision of fully software-defined Toyota vehicles: beloved, human-centered vehicles that evolve with their customers.

WbyT continues to redefine the future of mobility. Through the ongoing development of Arene, its AD/ADAS technologies, and Woven City (a purpose-built test course for mobility), WbyT is building a comprehensive mobility ecosystem that connects people, mobility, and infrastructure. This collaborative effort aims to co-create new value with society and bring a future with zero accidents closer for everyone’s benefit.
