China’s humanoid robots are not expected to replace human workers or trigger widespread unemployment, according to a Chinese official overseeing one of Beijing’s major tech hubs. This reassurance comes as the country ramps up investment and development in the robotics sector.
Liang Liang, deputy director of the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, told foreign media on Friday that he believes humanoid robots are meant to enhance productivity and take on dangerous tasks—not to supplant their human creators. He emphasized that these machines are intended to assist rather than replace people.
Liang pointed to the world’s first robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last month, as a symbolic effort to showcase this vision. The event featured two parallel tracks—one for human runners and the other for 20 robotic teams of varying shapes and capabilities—highlighting the collaborative future officials hope to foster between humans and robots.
Speaking at the headquarters of state-backed X-Humanoid (Beijing Humanoid Robotics Innovation Centre), Liang noted that the centre’s robot, Tiangong Ultra, won the inaugural race. In addition to the high-speed Ultra model, which can reach 12 kph (7.56 mph), the centre displayed other prototypes designed to perform routine tasks in dynamic environments.
In one demonstration, a robot repeatedly adjusted to disruptions—such as having an object moved or removed—until it successfully completed the task. This self-correcting behavior, the centre claims, will be crucial in enabling humanoid robots to become efficient and reliable assistants in the workplace.
